A status ailment is a state when by doing something in the game, or being attacked by an enemy, Tomba's status may suffer a change that either be helping, hindering or both.
Sometimes status ailments are required to gain access to hidden areas; for example, laughing opens the laughing doors and crying opens the crying doors. They also have a big tendency to cause problems, as some of them disables a game mechanic.
Different types of ailments[]

Caused by eating some mushrooms in Tomba! or eating a laughing fruit in Tomba! 2. When laughing, Tomba cannot use the weapon to stun foes; he will laugh instead.

It can also be gained by using the Psychic Fish. This status can be cured by either dying (unless you have 0 Lives left) or using the Psychic Fish again.
In the second game, it can be caused by eating a Taboo Fruit or using the Taboo Gate. This status can be cured by taking damage or eating the Taboo Fruit again.

Oil-Smeared[]
Caused by getting attacked by a Toradako, one of the oil-spitting enemies in Ranch Summit. When Tomba is covered in oil, he will be burned when coming into contact with fire sources, like the torches hanging around the area and by using the Fire Hammer or Torch Hammer.
In order to remove this ailment, Tomba must eat a Steak Sandwich, use the Toradako Oil Remover, or take a bath in the spa in Ranch Summit. If the player is quick, he/she can clear this status ailment by using the Fire Hammer/Torch Hammer directly after being covered by oil to avoid taking damage from contact with fire.
